Obituary from St. Cloud Times, March 21, 1938

C.A. Swenson, 210 Wilson Avenue NE, prominent in civic and munincipal life of St Cloud, as well as in the granite industry, died at 5:30 this morning. His death was caused by heart ailment from which he had suffered for several years.
The body is to be at the Colbert chapel until the funeral hour which has not been set, waiting word from members of the family who live on the Pacific coast. The service will be at the Swedish Baptist church with Rev. Earl Widen officiating and burial made in the Sauk Rapids cemetery.
Mr. Swenson was born in Jonkoping, Sweden. He grew up in Stockholm, coming to America in May, 1880. He was a stonecutter by trade. He lived for a time in St Paul where he married Miss Sarah Sutherland, who had come to America from Ljustorp, Sweden. In 1894 they moved to St Cloud where they have since resided.
Mr. Swenson took an active interest in the affairs of the Granite Cutters union of which he was president for a number of years. Before he retired because of ill health, he was with the United Granite Company, in the capacity of secretary.
In the days when the city council, the governing body of St Cloud, was made up of alderman from the various wards of the city, Mr. Swenson represented his home ward for many years. He also served as a member of the St Cloud board of education.
Another field in which he was active was music and he served as director of the choir of the First Baptist church during his early years in St Cloud and later as director ot the choir of the Swedish Baptist church.
Mrs. Swenson survives with six children - Emory Swenson of St Paul; George of Los Angeles; Conwell of Morton, Wash; Mrs. Irene Critchfield, St Paul; Mrs Ebba Childers, Ely; Mrs. Velma Peterson, Pillager. There are 15 grandchildren.

For many years C.A. Swenson was one of the leading men of the city, interested in the granite industry, both as a workman and as employer. He was active in the support of city government and education. For several years he was a member of the old city council, and of the school board. His interest in education was not theoretical, but of personal consern to his family. His children not only were graduated from the public schools but also from the Teachers college, and fine men and women they became.. He was a church leader, and possessed real musical ability, that his children inherited, an accomplishment that gave pleasure to friends as well as of advantage to themselves. Mr. Swenson by his honesty, his integrity and his active interest in what was of value to the community, won the respect and admiration of the entire community, whom he has served so well.
