R. Wilford Riegle

Roy Wilford Riegle was one of Emporia's most distinguished citizens. He practiced law here for decades; he served in the Kansas Legislature for 18 years; he fought in both World Wars and remained active in the military, and he rose to the highest national rank in a Masonic organization.

Mr. Riegle died Tuesday at Newman Hospital.

Roy Wilford Riegle was born April 27, 1896, in Lyons, the son of Uriah Brooks and Johanna Riegle. His family moved to Paxtonville, Pa,, for nine years before returning to Kansas.

Mr. Riegle graduated from St. John's High School before he enlisted in the United States Army just after the U.S. entered World War I.

During World War I, with Company L, 137th Infantry, 35th Division, Mr. Riegle was wounded by shrapnel at the Meuse-Argonne Offensive in France. He also participated in the Battle of St. Mihiel.

He joined Company D (later Company B), of the same regiment and division in 1920. Mr. Riegle then served continuously in the Kansas National Guard until 1956, progressing from first sergeant to colonel.

He and Keith Roberts, whom he met when both were students at the former Kansas State Teachers College, were married June 3, 1923, at Muskogee, Okla. They lived at 1522 Dover Road.

During World War II, Mr. Riegle served 5 1/2 years in the United States, Alaska, Southwest and Far Pacific, New Guinea, the Philippines and Japan. He was executive officer of the Military Government Section in Yokohama.

Mr. Riegle was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Army Commendational Medal with pendant and 14 other U.S. Medals, and the Military Medal of Merit by the Commonwealth of the Philippines. He was a graduate of five U.S. Army schools, including the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth. Mr. Riegle graduated from K.S.T.C., Washburn University and the Washburn School of Law. In all, he held five college degrees.

Mr. Riegle began his practice of law in Emporia in 1925. He retired about three years ago, He had been a probate and Juvenile judge for six years.

He was a member of the Kansas House of Representatives and Kansas State Senate for 18 years. In addition to his many legislative committee assignments, he was the Majority (Republican) Floor Leader in the House from 1937 until 1939.

He was a former president of many organizations, including the Kansas Day Club, Lyon County Bar Association, Fifth Judicial Bar Association, Lyon County Council of Churches, Lyon County Historical Society (14 years) and Kansas State Historical Society. He was a member of the state historical society's executive board for 20 years.

Mr. Riegel had been an officer in his Lutheran Church and Council. He also was a Sunday School superintendent. Several years ago Mr. Riegle became a member of the Church of Christ.

He was a member of the Ball-McColm Post 5 of the American Legion and held many state and national offices, as well as local offices, in that organization. He helped start many Sons of the American Legion groups. He was a drill instructor for the Emporia American Legion Drum Corps.

Mr. Riegle was a member of Lowry-Funston Post 1980 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and World War I Veterans, for which he was state judge advocate for 23 years. He also was a member of the 40 and 8.

Mr. Riegle was a "Most Eminent Past Grand Master" of the Knights Templar, a masonic organization. His masonic career was extensive and included memberships in Emporia Lodge 12, AF & AM, and Jopa Chapter 52 at Stafford. He was a member of the Arab Shrine at Topeka and Order of the Eastern Star.

He was captain and drill instructor or the Emporia Knights Templar Drill Team from 1929 to 1964, during which the team won 19 first-place wards in state competition. He was the sole survivor of the original drill team of 1921.

Mr. Riegle held many national offices for masonic organizations.

Mr. Riegle was The Gazette's "Man of the Week" on July 9, 1955. He also was featured in a Community Spotlight in April 1975, when he was named Most Eminent Grand Master of Knights Templar of the United States. In April 1982, another Community Spotlight focused on Mr. Riegle's illustrious careers.

Mr. Riegle was, for many years, listed in "Who's Who in the Midwest" and "Who's Who in Word's Commerce and Industry."

He is survived by his wife of the home; three daughters, Jean Lemons of Wichita, Jo Anna Scherrer of Old Bethpage, Long Island, N.Y., and Mary Keith Burns of Overland Park; a brother, Robert Daniel Riegle of Waterville; 11 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. His son Roy W. Riegle Jr., died in 1969.

The funeral service will be held at 10 A.M. Friday at Roberts-Blue-Barrentt Funeral Home. Clifford Craig, pastor of the Church of Christ, will conduct the service.

A graveside service, with full military honors, will be held Friday afternoon at the national cemetery in Leavenworth.

The coffin will remain closed.
