Machine operator at Milco in early years
Sophie E. (Ezzyk) Makar, 89, of Berwick died Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2011, at Berwick Retirement Village II.
Born Nov. 16, 1921, in Pittsburgh, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Catherine (Nodich) Ezzyk.
In her early years, she was a machine operator for Milco Industries.
Mrs. Makar was a member of Ss. Cyril & Methodius Ukrainian Catholic Church, Berwick, where she served on the ladies auxiliary.
Preceding her in death is her husband of 57 years, Philip H. Makar, who died May 3, 1995; a daughter: Pauline Groshek, who died March 3, 2005; five brothers: Alex, Albert, John, Michael and William Ezzyk; and two sisters: Mary Zenzel and Anna Rich.
Surviving are her four daughters: Julie, wife of Fred Shillinger of Wildwood, N.J.; Rose, wife of Gradon Fish of Orangeville; Kathleen Jasinski of Berwick; Joan, wife of Eric Stout of Berwick; one son: Philip Makar and his wife Debbie of Bloomsburg; 17 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; three sisters: Catherine, wife of Millard Jasinski of Berwick; Helen Dyer of Berwick; Alice, wife of Pete Star of Berwick; and two brothers: Joey Ezzyk and his wife Mary, of Berwick, and George Ezzyk and his wife Edna of Spring Hill, Fla.
Visitation will be held Thursday, Nov. 3, 2011, from 5-7 p.m. at the Mayo Funeral Home Inc., 110 Chestnut St., Berwick, where a Parastas will be held at 6:45 p.m. A Divine Liturgy will be held 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 4, 2011, at Ss. Cyril & Methodius Ukrainian Catholic Church, First Avenue and Warren Street, Berwick, with the Rev. John Seniw, her pastor, officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery in Berwick.
