Civil War Medal of Honor recipient. He enlisted in the Union Army at Middleton, Indiana, and served as a Private in Company E, 8th Indiana Infantry. In the battle at Cedar Creek, Virginia, on October 19, 1864, he captured the Confederate battle flag. He received his Medal of Honor from President Abraham Lincoln in Washington, D.C. on October 26, 1864.
