John Clay was a prison guard who was killed while four inmates made an almost successful prison escape. On November 24, 1905, around 3:00 PM, the prisoners found him and demanded that he hold his hands up. Defenseless, he was shot dead. John Clay was survived by a widow who received $2,500 by the prison after his death.
