"David McCrackin, a native of Pennsylvania, was a resident of Fairfield, Iowa, when he enlisted Nov. 4, 1861, at the age of 27 years. He mustered in Co M 4th Iowa Cavalry on Nov. 25, 1861. Appointed Musician and assigned to the Band as Leader. Mustered out July 18, 1862, under orders of the War Dept., A.G.O., discontinuing regimental bands. Commissioned 1st Lieutenant on April 27, 1864 at the age of 30 years. Mustered in Co I 45th Iowa Infantry (a "Hundred Days" regiment) May 26, 1864. Mustered out Sept. 16, 1864, Keokuk, Iowa, expiration of term of service.
David's brother, William Wallace McCrackin Jr., also served with the 4th Iowa Cavalry."
