William Wallace McCrackin was born in Pennsylvania, of Scotch-Irish parentage. In 1855, after the death of his father, the family moved to Fairfield, Jefferson County, Iowa. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he enlisted on 7 Nov 1861 at the age of 20. He mustered in Co M 4th Iowa Cavalry on 25 Nov 1861. He was appointed Musician and assigned to the Band. He mustered out 18 Jul 1862 at St. Louis, Missouri, under orders of the War Dep. A.G. O. which discontinued regimental bands. After his discharge, he enlisted in the US Navy and served as a mate on a federal gunboat on the Mississippi River. After serving out his enlistment in the naval service, he returned to Pennsylvania. William again entered his country's service, enlisting as a Private for a term of six months in Co G 2nd Pennsylvania Infantry on 23 Jul 1863. He mustered out on 21 Jan 1864.


William returned to Iowa when the Civil War was at an end. In 1868 he and Gertrude Junkin were married in Fairfield and William worked in a bank. They had three children: Helen, Virginia, and Wallace. William and his brother-in-law engaged in the sheep business in Montana for a short period of time, he worked at a bank in Omaha, Nebraska, and later at a bank in Butte, Montana. In 1894 he moved to Hamilton with Marcus Daly and with him organized the Ravalli County Bank. He later assumed control of the bank and became it's president. He served three terms as mayor of Hamilton, served as president of the State Bankers' Association, and also served on the Hamilton school board.


William died suddenly at his home in Hamilton at the age of 71 years. His death was caused by a stroke.

Mr. McCrackin moved to Montana with his wife in 1877, settling at Sand Coulee, where he engaged in raising sheep. Two years later, they went to Butte, where Mr. McCrackin was affiliated with the Clark Bank and later was president of the Silver Bow National Bank. They came to Hamilton in 1894, where Mr. McCrackin became the president of the Ravalli Company Bank of Hamilton, Montana.

He died in 1913.
