The Geneseo Republic - Sept. 13, 1900
Mr. Mattis Waltz, a pioneer resident of Geneseo, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Adolph Ott, in the third ward, at midnight at midnight Aug. 31st, 1900, of debility incident to age. Deceased was a native of Germany and was aged 72 years and 3 months. He emigrated to America about 47 years ago and most of his life since, he resided in Geneseo. His wife died some years ago, and the survivors of his family are four daughters; Mrs. Barbara Hanberg and Mrs. Mary Rubink of Graf, Nebraska; Mrs. Rosine Santee of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and Mrs. Elizabeth Ott, of this city. He also leaves one sister, Mrs. Barbara Weinrich, of this city. The deceased was a carpenter by trade and followed that calling most of his active life. He was an upright man in all dealings and one who had the esteem of all acquaintances. He was a member of Zion Evangelical Church and an earnest worker therein. The funeral was held at Zion Church, Saturday at 2 pm, his pastor Rev W. B. Rilling, officiating. The services were largely attended by old friends an neighbors. Two of his daughters from abroad, Mrs. Santee and Mrs. Rubink, were present at the final obsequies. Mrs. Hanberg, who had visited him about a month prior to death, being unable to come, again. The daughters have the sympathy of the community for the loss that has fallen upon them in the death of a kind and loving father.
