Rita Hourigan Dauenhauer, 91, of Syracuse, passed away Friday, November 4, at Loretto. Rita graduated as salutatorian of the first graduating class of Onondaga Central School in June 1936. She then graduated from Normal School and Syracuse University. She taught for two years in a one room rural school in Otisco and for seven years at Onondaga Central. She retired after 32 years with the Syracuse City School District. She was a member of All Saints Church. Rita was an avid reader, a word problem solver, and writer. She wrote her family history "An Irish Family History". Rita was the widow of Walter, who died in 2001. She was also predeceased by her brother, Gerald Hourigan, and her sisters, Kathleen Mitchell and Eileen Costello. Surviving are her sister-in-law, Margaret Hourigan of Navarino; brother-in-law, Paul (Rita) Costello of Cazenovia; two nieces, Theresa (Bill) Sabourin of Landon, Canada, Patricia (Dean) Betz of Texas; nephews, John (Nancy) Hourigan of Elbridge, Jerry (Patty) Hourigan, Mike (Chris) Hourigan, Pat (Terry) Hourigan all of Navarino, Timothy (Louise) Costello of Pittsford. Services: Thursday 10 a.m. at Butler-Badman Funeral Home, Inc., 4504 W. Seneca Tpk., with a Mass of Christian burial to follow at 11 a.m. in All Saints Church. Interment at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, Marcellus. Friends may call Wednesday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home.
