ANDREWS, LIFELONG RESIDENT OF AREA, DIES IN 76TH YEAR

Robert Matthews Andrews of 23 Hamilton St., Guilderland, died suddenly at his home on Sunday, Jan. 10. He was in his 76th year.

Mr. Andrews, one of a family of five children, was born Oct. 23, 1895, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Andrews. The family lived in a farmhouse on Hamilton St., which still stands. All of the other four children pre-deceased Robert Andrews. They were: Mrs. Joseph Van Atten (Vina), of Schenectady : Mrs. Russell Miller (Nellie), of Guilderland : Alice M. Andrews, of Guilderland : and Gerald Andrews, of Guilderland. Gerald (Jed) died in 1933, in his middle 30's.

Robert Andrews attended the grade school in Guilderland (district No. 4) which is now the Guilderland Town Hall. He then attended the old Altamont High School, from which he was graduated (with his brother Gerald) in 1915. He attended Union College, from which he was graduated in 1918. After graduating from college, he worked for one year at the General Electric Co.

He married Alice A. Flagler on Aug. 18, 1922. After marriage he went to Highland where he taught school for the year 1923-24. In 1924, he went to Callicoon, N.Y. and taught school there until 1930. The Andrews' only child, Virginia Marian Andrews, was born in Callicoon on July 11, 1925. She is now Mrs. Albert F. Dwyer of 73 Willow St., Guilderland.

In 1930, the property was purchased from the late John Hartman, on Route 20, to start the Andrews Florist business. The florist building was erected in 1931, and the name "Andrews Florist" became known over a wide area. Mr. Andrews was active in the business until Memorial Day 1970.

While attending College, Bob and Gerald built what is now the Master Cleaners building – to earn money during the summer for college expenses. Bob taught school in Guilderland District 4 school in Guilderland District 4 (Town Hall) for about 8 years.

Mr. Andrews had a great interest in horses and racing. In 1944 he bought Peter Abbey Jr., a racing horse. This was his second horse, the first being Frank Hanover.

He was a member of Noah Lodge No. 754, F. & A.M. of Altamont, with which he was affiliated in 1944. He served as high priest of Noah Chapter in one of the years of the early 1950's.

Another business enterprise is the Andrews Trailer Park, on Rt. 20, which was started in 1952. The park now has 25 trailers.

Bob played baseball in his youth with many other young men of the area. About 1940 he organized the Bob Andrews "Petunias", a team that played baseball behind the Bobl (?) bus garage; plaing such teams as the Guilderland "Indians" (youth of Guilderland). Among members of the teams were Harold Kelly, Oman and Roma Schaadt, Joe and John Pullen, Bill Siver, Archive Siver, and Tom Constable.

At one time Mr. Andrews worked with the Guilderland Water Bureau. At the age of 25 he was a New York State inspector of weights and measures.

Mr. Andrews' immediate survivors are his wife and daughter. He is also survived by three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services were held from the Fredendall Funeral Home, Altamont, Wednesday afternoon. Rev. Douglas Gray, pastor of Hamilton Union Presbyterian church, Guilderland, officiated. Interment was at Prospect Hill cemetery, Guilderland. Noah Lodge, F. & A.M. conducted services at the funeral home Tuesday evening.
