Grace Carter, 103, died Monday, December 15, 2003 in Manorcare, Fargo, ND.

Grace Harriet Walden was born October 23, 1900 in Clinton, Iowa to Henry and Mabel (Ball) Walden. She spent her childhood years in Clinton and Boone, Iowa. In 1911, she moved with her family to a farm in the Red River Valley near Baker, MN.

Grace graduated from Moorhead State University (Moorhead Normal School) and was an elementary school teacher for several years in East Grand Forks, and Willmar, MN.

Grace and Leroy Carter were married in Willmar in 1922. They spent much of their married life in various cities in the United States before settling in Minneapolis, MN in the 1940's.

After her husband died in 1948, Grace continued living in Minneapolis. She worked for National Tea Store. She moved to Fargo, ND in 1959 to be near her daughter and grandchildren.

Her passion was her children and grandchildren. She loved playing the piano and enjoyed relating stories of her early years in Iowa and the Red River Valley.

Grace is survived by her daughter, Polly Ames, Minnetonka, MN; her son, Roy (Terri) Carter, Pequot Lakes, MN; eight grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and two nieces.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; three sisters and two nephews.

The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. in Jenny Roberts Room in First Presbyterian Church, Fargo. There will be visitation in the church Saturday one hour before the funeral service. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Fargo.
