Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Denny and Pettett Funeral Home, Murphysboro, for Arch Clyde Edwards, 68, a former Jackson County sheriff, of 1916 Hardy St., Murphysboro.

He was dead on arrival Saturday at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Murphysboro.

Edwards had been a deputy sheriff in 1954 to 1962 under Raymond Dillinger and Howard Cheatham. He was also on the guard staff at Menard Penitentiary from 1948 to 1952.

He was born Jan. 6, 1905, in Ava, to Robert and Angie Harrison Edwards.

He was a member of the Mississippi Valley Gun Club, the Moose Club, Murphysboro, and the Illinois Sheriffs' Association.

He also was a retired farmer. On Oct. 28, 1966, in Murphysboro, he married Ruth Austin,

Survivors include his wife; a son Frankie of Murphysboro, a daughter Kathrine Lindsey of Carbondale; stepsons, Robert Austin of Granite City, James Austin of Murphysboro, and Thomas Austin of Vergennes; a brother, Roy of Gorham; sisters, Alma Levan of Belleville and Delia Mitchell of Springfield; grandsons; and seven step-grandchildren.

Four sisters and five brothers preceded him in death.

The Rev. Gene Sandefur will officiate, with burial in Evergreen Cemetery in Ava. Friends may call after 4 p.m. today at the funeral home.
