Joseph S. Matlick, second child of Samuel and Mary Matlick, was born May 5, 1851 [sic], in Reno Dist., Preston county, West Va., and departed this life at his home in Kahoka, Mo., Sunday morning, Sept. 21, 1924, at 6:30 o'clock, at the age of 83 years, 4 months and 16 days. During the Civil war he enlisted in Co. B, 4th W. Va. Cavalry where he served with honor and loyalty. On April 7, 1964, he was married to Miss Martha Bishop and to this union were born two sons, Frank Asher Matlick and Walter Ellsworth Matlick. In November 1865, they moved with his father and family to Missouri, and settled on a farm in Washington township, Clark county, where on Sept. 10, 1866, his wife died. On March 4, 1869, he was married to Martha E. Ewart, and to this union three daughters were born, Bessie, Gertrude and Florence. On Dec. 21, 1890, they moved to Kahoka, Mo., where he engaged in the lumber business in which he was later joined by his son, Walter. Since early life he has been a faithful and active member of the Methodist Episcopal church. He is survived by his wife and two sons, three daughters, five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. The following children survive: Mrs. Bessie Shepherd of Lansing, Kas.; Mrs. Gertrude Golden of Topeka, Kas.; Mrs. Florence Rex of Kansas City, Mo.; Frank Matlick of Bishop, Cal.; Walter Matlick of Kahoka, Mo. Two sisters and two brothers: J. N. Matlick of Wyaconda, Mo.; Jacob G. Matlick of Des Moines, Iowa; Mrs. Fannie Carothers of Kirksville, Mo., and Mrs. Bell Bishoff of Kahoka. The funeral services were conducted from the home Monday afternoon, at 3 o'clock by Rev. I. T. Gragg. Interment in Kahoka cemetery. The son, Franklin Asher of Bishop, California, was not able to be present at the funeral but Walter E. Matlick of Kahoka, Mo., Bessie Myrtle Shepherd of Kansas City, Kas., Gertrude Golden of Topeka, Kas., and Florence Rex of Kansas City, Mo., were all able to be with him during his last illness.
