Chico Enterprise Record, Monday, April 6, 1953: "Mrs. Spurgeon Dies Saturday at Oroville Hospital. Mrs. Emma Swearingen Spurgeon, lifetime resident of Chico, died Saturday evening in the Good Samaritan Hospital in Oroville after an extended illness.

"She was born on Dayton Road near Chico, June 28, 1876, the daughter of Martha and John B. Swearingen. She was educated in the Chico schools and graduated from Chico Normal with the class of 1903. After her graduation, she taught in the public schools of Chico for 18 years. In 1928 she was married to John (Ed) Spurgeon in Chico. She was a member of Beulah Rebeckah Lodge No. 60 and Ladies Encampment Auxiliary of IOOF No. 33.

"Besides her husband, she is survived by a sister, Mrs. Ada Bradley of Gustine; a nephew, Kenneth M. Swearingen of Chico; and three nieces, Mrs. Forest Evans of Chico, Mrs. Mary Jane Stanley of Newman, and Mrs. Zeda Cochran of Modesto.

"Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Huddleston Funeral Chapel with Dr. William MacInnes of the Bidwell Memorial Presbyterian Church officiating with the rites of Beulah Rebeckah Lodge given at the graveside.

"Interment will be in the IOOF section of the Chico Cemetery. Members of Beulah Rebeckah Lodge will please assemble at the Huddleston Funeral Chapel to attend the services in a body."
