Paul Varner, 85, Halifax, died Monday, July 21, in Halifax Infirmary, following a brief illness.
Born in New Germany, he was a son of the late Matthew and Udevilla Varner.
He was a member of Edgewood United Church and for several years, was an active member of the Horseshoe Club in Spryfield. He was employed at Malagash Salt Mines from 1931-1940. From 1940- 1967, he was employed with the Halifax Dockyard. He retired in 1967.
He is survived by his wife, the former Leah Matthews; seven sons, Earl, Raymond, Russell, and Richard, all of Halifax; Clinton, Dartmouth; Carl, Elmsdale; Loran, Shelburne; four daughters, Shirley (Mrs. Edmund Cameron), Dartmouth; Ruth (Mrs. Kenneth Russell), Lake Echo; Hazel Brownrigg, Dartmouth; Faye (Mrs. Kenneth Hartlen), Oromocto, New Brunswick; a sister, Emma, New Albany, Annapolis County; a brother, Aseph, Springfield, Annapolis County; 26 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a son, Buddy; three brothers, Fred, Percy, and Anson; three sisters, Eva, Jenny, and May.
The body is in J. Albert Walker Funeral Home, Spryfield. Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday in Edgewood United Church, Halifax, Rev. Ted MacLeod officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery.
