Obituary 1920: Joseph Meyers, born in Trier, Germany, but a highly respected resident of Westphalia and Portland for 51 years, died at his home on the west side of early Thursday evening. He was 77 years old August 11th last, and for months had been in failing health. During the two weeks previous to his death, decline was rapid. Funeral services were held at St. Patrick church on Monday morning, Rev. Fr. John A. Griffin officiating. Burial was in the Catholic annex to the township cemetery. Mr. Meyers was 26 years old when he came to Westphalia from Germany. Soon after he located there, he married Josephine Schreck, who survives him. The couple moved to a farm not far from the Portland line, residing there until they came to the village, eight years ago. Two years ago, Mr. Meyers sold the farm to his son Bernard. The 10 children were all present at the funeral. They are Mrs. John M. Simon, Edward B. Meyers, Portland; Mrs. Jos. Noeker, Bernard B. Meyers, Westphalia; Peter J., Joseph J., and Sylvester J., Lansing; John A., Belle Plain, IA; Carl F., Detroit; Wm. J., Chicago.
