Gilbert McClure was the 6th and last child of William and Caroline Hewett McClure. He first married his Brother, William McClure IV's widow, Martha A. McClure in 1871. We never learned Martha's maiden name. Martha and her first husband William McClure IV (Gilbert's Brother) were married in 1863 and in Feb 1864 had a son named "Willie" who died in his 3th year of age March 1867. When Willie died, his mother Martha was 2 months pregnant with their second son "Eddie" (Edger) who was due in and was born October 1867. April 1871, William McClure IV died leaving widow Martha with a three year old son, Eddie (Edger). To add to her misery her only remaining son, Eddie also died in Jun 1871 just two months after his father William died in April 1871.

William's Brother Gilbert steps forward and marries his brother's widow Martha in 1871 They had one child together, Arthur McClure born Sep 1874. But, tragically, just 4 months after Arthur is born, Martha herself dies Jan 1875 age 28 years leaving Gilbert with a 4 month old infant child. The NY Census taken in June 1875 shows Gilbert living with his Parents (William and Caroline McClure in Deposit) as a widower with a 9 month old son, Arthur.

January 1878 Gilbert remarries to a divorcee, Lydia Louise Willey who had previously been married to George Maffitt. Gilbert's son Arthur was in his 3rd year at the time of the marriage, and grew up with Lydia Louise as the only mother he really knew. Lydia died 24 Sep 1893.

Gilbert was a Carriage/wagon maker in Deposit, Broome County, NY and according to the History of Broome County, published 1885, we see the following information "Among carriage makers Kingsley & Ives were as early any whom we can learn. I. C. Ball began the business in 1863, in the shop now occupied by D. M. Gifford. Mr. Ball built an addition to the shop in 1867, and continued there until 1875. Gilbert McClure then took the premises for a short time. George Demander became the owner of the property and sold it to John Smith. Several tenants have since occupied the shop for short periods." A story in the Deposit courier notes that Gilbert suffered a serious injury to his hand while operating a large circular saw and had to leave the business. After leaving the shop in Deposit he repaired wagons and carriages out of his barn. In his later years he moved to Livingston Manor, Sullivan County and worked as a maintenance man/janitor at the State hospital.
