Oscar was crippled by rickets as a young man. In October 1918 he and his brother Harry and sister Tille were living in the old family home in Normanna Township when the Cloquet fire, the biggest natural disaster in Minnesota history, swept through the area and burned the family farm. The Red Cross built a small cabin on the property after the fire. Oscar and his brother Harry moved in and this tiny building became their lifelong home. Tillie moved to Duluth where she found employment and shelter as a maid. The two brothers had a couple of cows, a pig and a garden and were basically self sufficient on the farm. During WWII the brothers were able to survive without ration stamps.
