Both the WWI and WWII draft cards gives his date of birth as 11 Oct, 1881, his age is given as 2 on the 1885 census and 12 on the 1895. His sister Katherine was born in April 1880, making an October 1880 date for him unlikely.

From The Manchester Press, May 22, 1958:

Funeral services were scheduled at 1:30 PM today [Thurs] in the Shelly Funeral Home for Frederick Lorenzo Appleby 77, who died early Tuesday at his home here.

Mr. Appleby had been in delicate health for about 11 years, having suffered his first stroke when he was 65. He had been a cement contractor until ill health forced his retirement.

Born at Wadena on Oct 11, 1880, he was the son of Homer and Martha Sauers Appleby. He grew up in Wadena. He lost his left leg at age 15 after suffering an injury and later lost the sight of his left eye after a piece of steel was embedded in it.

He was married to Mildred Dennis at Coggon on March 1, 1922. Surviving in addition to his wife are three daughters, Mrs. Burdette [Helen] Stone of Manchester; Mrs. Victor [Minnie] Bartow of Cedar Rapids, and Mrs. Lawrence [Hazel] Wiscus of Manchester; a stepson Willis E. Candler of Nashua, MO and two stepdaughters, Mrs. Thomas Richardson of Chicago, Ill, and Mrs. Michael McCoy of Independence.

He was preceded in death by his parents and 10 brothers and sisters.
Mr. Appleby was previously married to Rachel Cornwell, and they were divorced.
