Crimea War British Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. He served as a Lieutenant in the Corps of Royal Engineers. On June 18, 1855, his contruction team came under a heavy Russian assault in the Redan at Sebastopol, Crimea. During the attack, he went in the trenches under heavy fire on numerous occasions to bring in wounded officers and men. For determined gallantry, he was awarded the Victoria Cross Medal in February 1857. He remained in the British Army serving in the China War 1860, the Egyptian War 1882, the expeditions of Eastern Sudan in 1884 and Suakin in 1885, retiring a Lieutenant General in June 1890.
