Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He served as a Major General in the Union Army. He was awarded the Medal of Honor as a Lieutenant Colonel in the 8th Illinois Infantry for action on April 9, 1865 at Fort Blakely, Alabama. His citation reads "Led the right wing of his regiment, and, springing through an embrasure, was the first to enter the enemy's works, against a strong fire of artillery and infantry."
