Lloyd C. Abbott, 93, of Du Quoin, passed away at 9:10 A.M., Monday, November 28, 2011 at the Fair Acres Nursing Home in Du Quoin.
Lloyd had worked for the coal mines in construction for twenty-five years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Du Quoin and the Anglers Sunday School Class. Lloyd was a U.S. Army-Air Corp veteran of World War II, serving as a Staff Sergeant. He served in the campaigns of Tunisian, Sicilian, Naples, Foggia Rome, Arno, No Appennines, Southern France, and Air Combat of the Balkans. He had received the European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with one silver and two bronze Battle Stars, four Overseas Service Bars, one Service Stripe District Unit Badge with 1st Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster. He was a fifty year member of the American Legion, a member of the Elks and UMW of A. Lloyd was a Mason and Shriner. He had been a member for over fifty years at the Elks Country Club.
He was born October 3, 1918 at West Frankfort, IL, the son of Ocie Oler and Lillie M. (Parr) Abbott.
He married Mary Earlene Geistdorfer on December 24, 1941 at Cape Girardeau, MO and she preceded him in death on October 26, 2011.
He is survived by one daughter - Sue Ford of Du Quoin, one granddaughter - Ronna Martin and husband Frankie of Du Quoin, one grandson - Scott Ford and wife Natasha of Du Quoin, three great grandchildren - Mallory Martin Yeager and husband Justin, Kyle Martin, and Faith Erin Ford, all of Du Quoin, one sister - Betty Garrett of Atlanta, GA, and one brother - Gene Abbott of Du Quoin.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, four sisters and three brothers.
Graveside services will be at 11:00 A.M., Friday, December 2, 2011 at the Sunset Memorial Park at Du Quoin with Rev. Joe Wagner officiating.
Those attending the service are asked to go directly to the cemetery.
Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Du Quoin V.F.W. and American Legion.
Burial will be in the Sunset Memorial Park at Du Quoin.
Friends may make memorials to the First Baptist Church Building Fund or Hospice of Southern Illinois and will be accepted at the funeral home.
