Wilbert Norman Armstrong 1930 - 1931: Wilbert, the son of Virgil and Bernice Ronk
Armstrong, born July 26, 1930 in Madison., Kansas.
Baby Dies after Suffocation.
Wilbur Norman Armstrong, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Armstrong, of
Madison, died at 6 o'clock Sunday afternoon after being accidentally smothered under
bed clothing at the Clarence Armstrong home, 17 Neosha. The child, a 9-month-old
baby, was the youngest of seven children.
Members of the Virgil Armstrong and Bert Armstrong families, of Madison, came
to Emporia Saturday night to visit with Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Armstrong. Sixteen
children and six adults were given beds in the small home of Clarence Armstrong at 17
Neosho. Beds were made on the floor Saturday night for several of the children. Sunday Mrs. Clarence Armstrong picked up several articles of bed clothing and placed them on
a bed, not knowing that the child was on the bed and already covered with a light spread.
This was about 12:30 o'clock. An hour later the child was missed and was discovered
unconscious and almost suffocated under the bed clothing. Mrs. Armstrong rushed into
the yard with the child and a doctor was called The child was revived and the doctor
left. A few minutes before 6 o'clock the child again lapsed into unconsciousness and was
dead before the doctor could be recalled Quick pneumonia, induced by a slight cold
and the suffocation, is believed to have been the direct cause of the death.
The body was taken to Madison this morning by Rev. J. C. Brogan, Lee Wright,
Mrs. Fred Rowland, Mrs. W. H. LeGresley and Mrs. Carl Briley, friends of the
Armstrongfamily. Funeral services will be at the Methodist church in Madison at 2
o'clock Tuesday afternoon. Interment will be in the Madison cemetery. (Blakely
Cemetery).
