Private Barnet Cole fought in 2 of the most pivotal battles of the Revolutionary War. One was the first battle that Washington's army fought after coming out of the brutal winter at Valley Forge : Monmouth. This was the first time that the Revolutionary War regular troops fought face to face against the English troops in a big battle and did not crack and run. It stopped the English from marching in to New York and ending the revolution.

Private Barnet Cole also fought in the battle of Saratoga: also known as the capture of Burgoyne (British General Burgoyne and his 8,000 troops). This was perhaps the most pivotal engagement of the Revolutionary war. The goal of the British was to split the Americans in half inside of the state of New York. Had the British prevailed, the war would most certainly have gone to the British.

But during this engagement the British were bested by the American troops and Burgoyne ended up surrendering himself and 8,000 troops. This weakness brought France and Spain in to the war on the side of the Americans and brought the French fleet to the coast of our shores which ultimately sealed the fate of the British in the war.

For his service in the Revolutionary War, Private Barnet Cole earned a pension of $8 per month, or $96 dollars per year as it was awarded. He served for 3 years and was honorably discharged in about April 1780. His pension was granted.
