He was born September 14, 1903, in Garrison, PA , a son of Joseph A. and Cassandra Patterson Phillips.
He graduated from Blacksville High School and attended West Liberty State College.
He was a self-employed painting contractor for 45 years. He was a member of the Washington Street Methodist Church.
His first wife, Dorothy Cowan Phillips, died April 29, 1967. His second wife, Alberta McAfoose Phillips died June 9, 1981.
Surviving are two sons, William G. Phillips of Waynesburg and Edison B. Phillips Jr. of Simsburg, Connecticut; a daughter, Sally (Daniel) Litwinovich of Waynesburg; two sisters, Olive Phillips Headley (J.K.) McIninch and Sweet Phillips, both of Waynesburg, PA. Deceased are five brothers, Charles, Oak, Marion. Lloyd and Joe Phillips and three sisters, Bess Chalfant, Gay Keener, and Pauline Joanne Phillips.
