Richard followed in his father's footsteps and became a brick mason. Married Julia Ann Lawrence December 23, 1861, at Ledbury, Herefordshire, England. Julia worked as a glove maker and dressmaker.

Richard left England March 8, 1875 heading to Brazil to find his riches in gold. Richard took is sons George and Richard with him to Brazil leaving Julia and 4 children back in England.

Richard passed away from fever/influenza, never returning to England.
