Lizzie Norton has a second memorial on findagrave at Woodlawn Cemetery, Winona, MN with the name, "Mrs. D Norton." The note there says her remains were moved to Washington DC, but it may well be that her journey stopped in Ohio. Or her mother had her memorial inscribed in the family plot in OH for sentimentality reasons (my g-grandmother did the same for my grandfather). Her mother also donated a stained glass window in Lizzie's memory at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Winona, MN in 1873 (note the time gap), but the inscription in the window reads: "Lizzie Sherman wife of late D.S. Norton" Norton died in 1870.
ELIZABETH ("LIZZIE") HOGG SHERMAN NORTON (1837-1862) was born in Ohio to John and Margaret Hogg Sherman. She died at the age of 25 of "perils of childbirth" and was first buried in the yard of Myron K. Drew, then along with her infant son, Charles Lester Norton who died later the same year, was reinterred in Woodlawn Cemetery, Winona, MN in 1864.
Lizzie was second cousin to General W. T. Sherman, and the first wife of Senator Daniel Sheldon Norton, a maverick Republican senator who tended to vote with the Democrats on matters of national policy. During the impeachment and trial of President Andrew Johnson in 1868, the Minnesota legislature directed Norton to vote for Johnson's removal but Norton was one of eight Republicans who broke ranks with the party and voted against conviction. Johnson remained in office by a single vote. Norton died in office two years later.
