Mitchell Walters was a private in Company C, 5th Tennessee Infantry Regiment, USA, during the Civil War, as indicated by the pension granted by the US government. His records indicate his name was spelled Michal, Mitchel, and Mitchell. Civil War Pension Index card indicates Mitchell P. Walters applied for a pension on 15 Nov 1884, application #589457, certificate #502054. The card does not indicate from which state he filed the application, but it is assumed he did so from Kentucky. After he died in 1890, his widow Mary Ann applied for a widow's pension on 29 Oct 1890, application #455054, certificate no. 408797, from the state of Kentucky. Her pension began on 22 Nov 1890, and she received $8 per month plus $2 a month for each of her 4 children who were under the age of 16. Samuel J. Arrington, a great-grandson of Mitchell and Mary Ann Walters, has the original of the widow's pension notification from the US Department of the Interior. His military record in located in NARA film M392, roll 15.

M. P. Walters died of the "flucks", according to an entry in the family Bible.
