According to family lore, the Lemons were full-blooded Cherokee Indians. They were from McMinnville, Tennessee. During the Trail of Tears, the removal of the Cherokees from Tennessee and the Carolinas, the Lemons hid in the mountains and did not go to Oklahoma. (See UPDATE below)

On the 1900 census, Mary Ann indicates she is 70, born in Jan 1830. However, in 1870 she was 25, born about 1845. In 1880 she was 40, born about 1840. Exact date of birth is not known.

*****UPDATE: In 2016 Kim Arrington Ashby, a direct descendant of Mary Lemons Walters (great-great-granddaughter), received the results of a DNA test. There was NOT one iota of Native American ancestry in her DNA, thus debunking the family lore about Mary's "Cherokee" blood.
