His father, Edward, was a Gloucester fisherman who was lost at sea when Daniel was 1 year old. His mother, Anna Knowlton, died from unknown causes when Daniel was 3 years old. Daniel was indentured and apprenticed to Jonathan and Esther Lane on 19 April 1768 in Gloucester, Essex County, MA at age 3. He was apprenticed until he was 21 years old on 29 November 1785.
The indenture contract states 'the said Apprentice his master and mistress will and faithfully shall serve...keep close, these Commandments lawful and honest every where he shall gladly obey:
he shall do no damage to his said Master or Mistress...
At Cards, Dice, or any other unlawful Game or Games he shall not play:
Fornication he shall not commit:
Matrimony he shall not contract:
Taverns... he shall not haunt or frequent...
His Master and Mistress: Covenant and Agree to teach him to read, write and cypher and to teach him 'the Art, Trade, and Mystery of a Cordwainer or Shoemaker.'

Daniel signed a marriage contract 2 September 1786 in Bakerstown Plantation (now Minot), Cumberland County, Massachusetts, (now Cumberland County, Maine).
He married Mary Leach 15 February 1787 in Bakerstown Plantation. Mary was born before May 1766 in Gloucester, Essex County, MA. Mary was the daughter of Elijah Leach and Eunice Herrick. She died after 1852.

On 1 April 1782, Daniel enlisted at Cape Ann, Mass. He served as a private in the 2nd Massachusetts Regiment of the Massachusetts Line during the Revolution.

Daniel died 16 September 1841 in Bolsters Mills, Harrison Township, Cumberland County, Maine at 76 years of age. His body was interred September 1841 in Row 10 in Bolsters Mills Cemetery, Bolsters Mills, Harrison Twp, Cumberland.
