Leslie Lugar passed away Thursday, December 8, 2011, at his home in Charlottesville.

He was born on May 11, 1933, in Gap Mills, West Virginia and graduated from Gap Mills High School.

He was a United States Airforce veteran and served in the Korean War. While serving in the military he met and married Dorothy Louise McCollum, a native of Oklahoma. Leslie attended Virginia Tech for three years and developed an abiding enthusiasm for the Virginia Tech football program. He worked for Trailways Bus Company for ten years. Leslie worked for the City of Charlottesville Department of Parks and Recreation for 18 years and retired in 1997.

Leslie was affable, good-humored, and devoted to his family. His granddaughters call him the "Sweetest Man on Earth."

He was preceded in death by his mother, Lena Lugar; a brother, Albert Lugar; and his wife of 48 years, Dorothy McCollum Lugar.

He is survived by two sons and their wives, Michael Lugar and his wife Janice, Ricky Lugar and his wife, Frances Dykstra; two granddaughters, Kara Lugar and Annie Lugar; one great-grandson, Ethan Powell; Leslie's sister and her husband, Patricia and Tom Clemens; two nephews and their families, Chris and Chip Clemens; and one niece and her family, Cindy Clemens.

A memorial service was held Monday, December 12, 2011, at the Hill and Wood Funeral Home.
