Walter Hurlbert, 77, of Kelliher, died Jan. 4, 1991 at the Kelliher Care Center.

Born March 24, 1913, in Ash Township, Clark County, S.D., to Jessie and Margaret Hurlbert, he moved to Eckman, N.D. in 1929. In 1933 he worked in the logging camps north of Kelliher. He was married to Luella Miller July 12, 1941 at Botteneau, N.D. From 1942 to 1944, Hurlbert worked in the shipyards at Everett, Wash. He entered the Army and was dischargerd in 1946. The couple farmed in the Kelliher area from 1946 to 1968. He worked for the Eire Mining Company from 1960 to 1975 when he retired. He was a member of the Bemidji VFW.

He is survived by his wife, Luella, Kelliher; one son, Sheldon, of Virginia; three daughters, Janette Leland, of Elk River, Judy Baird, of Big Falls, Karen Ungerecht, of Northome; one brother, J. Clifton, of Aberdeen, S.D.; four sisters, Eva Scholl, of Kelliher, Agnes Gergen of Pine City, Elaine Servin of Stuart, Fla., Lorrine Homes, Lansford, N.D.; and 11 grandchildren. He was preceded by five brothers and one sister.
