First settler of Ellington, who came in 1717.Ellington was part of Windsor and then East Windsor until its incorporation in 1876. Samuel Pinney II first brought 30 arces of land in what is now Ellington in 1723. Samuel II was the son of Samuel Pinney and grandson of the partiarch of the Pinney family in America, Humphrey. On May 30, 1923, the samuel Pinney Memorial Arch was dedicated in the Ellington Center Cemetery. A reading, "The Mary and John", commemorated the 400-ton ship on which Humphrey Pinney sailed from Plymouth, England to Boston, Massachusetts, in 1630. The hymn "Oh, God geneath Thy Guiding Hand" was sung, and remarks were made by descendant William Nelson Pinney before the arch was unveiled.
