On June 5th 1916, in his Draft Registration Card, Walter reported that he was 22, single, living at home, and worked as a Dairy Demonstrator for the Otsego County Farm Bureau. His father, Gervas L. Cornell, was the registrar who signed the form.

A short notice appeared on page 3 of the Thursday, August 8th, 1918 edition of the Richfield Springs, NY Mercury newspaper. "--Intelligence of the death of another Otsego boy serving with the colors was received on Saturday [August 3, 1918], when Mr. and Mrs. Gervas Cornell of West Laurens received news that their eldest son, Walter Cornell, who volunteered for service and was sent on July 14 last to New York City for instruction as a radio operator, had died at 12:25 that morning at the Williamsburg Hospital in Brooklyn. Death was attributed to acute cardiac trouble. It is believed that his illness followed vaccination."
