Clarence was born in Waseca, Waseca County, Minnesota on November 2, 1874. His parents were Richard and Orry Wood Middaugh. Clarence was a veteran of the Spanish American War, Co K, 12th Minnesota Infantry. He married Carrie Plowman in Waseca on June 2, 1899. Six children were born to Clarence and Carrie, including two who died in infancy. They lived in Waseca until around 1928, when they moved to Minneapolis. According to his Death Certificate, Clarence died in Waseca on September 21, 1941. Carrie lived until 1953.

Clarence and Carrie are buried in her parents' (Louis & Mary or Minnie Plowman or Plagmann) lot in Woodville cemetery. Clarence's last residence was 1001 West Broadway, Minneapolis. He was retired from the railroad. Clarence was a Spanish-American War veteran, Company K, 12th Minnesota Infantry.
