Frank and Harriet Mears’s grandchildren: Jeanie, Marian, Kay, Walter and John all talked about their grandparents and their collection of photographs of spending time with them. Their childhood memories reflected fondly of having lived down the street from their grandparents. After church, their family traditionally would walk to their grandparents home for Sunday dinners. Grandpa “Doc” would bake the ham basted with mustard sauce. Grandma “Maw” would serve this with a medley of vegetables. Her traditional dessert was her Bundt Kuchen with apricot filling and served with cream teas like her parents did from the Midlands area. Before dinner was ready, their grandchildren would gather in the family room library and read the many books. Their grandfather's father was a principal and teacher at Oak Hill School, so he had a great volume of books for them to read (all ages) . They also had a victrola that their Grandfather would play Scottish music for their family. Their grandmother was a piano teacher. Eugene and Mabel could play the piano. Their grandmother taught all her grandchildren how to play the piano. After their Grandmother Harriet died, their grandfather already was already suffering from dementia and died not too long after. Their Grandmother had inherited $30 k from her mother's probate estate. When Eugene’ parents passed away, he gave everything to Mabel so she could enjoy trips abroad.
