After their marriage Nils and Kirstine continued to live in Oslo using various forms of the surname Tostensen (Torstensen and Thorstensen). Their first three children were born in Oslo. Theodor Lauritz was born 8 Apr 1878 but died in August of that year. Their second child, Anna was born 2 May 1879 but died days later. Trygve Laurits, their third child, was born 8 May 1880.
Almost exactly one year later the three of them left Oslo on the ship Rollo, destination listed as Whalan (MN) where Kirstine's family had settled. However, shortly after their arrival they moved to Minneapolis where their next child, Albertine Mathilde was born and another move brought them to the Gladstone area of St. Paul where their family grew with the arrival of seven more children:
Alma Nicoline in 1885, Judith Florence in 1887, Henry in 1889 (he died in infancy), Hjalmer "Hal" Leonard in 1891, Norman "Nim" in 1893, Lillian Bertine in 1895 and Edward in 1897.
In America their names changed again, Nils Thorstensen became Nels Thorson and Anne Kirstine Larsdatter became Stina Thorson. For many years Nels worked in St. Paul as a pattern maker in a machine shop. They continued to live the rest of their lives in St. Paul and were loyal supporters of Bethany Lutheran Church. Nels died of stomach cancer and was laid to rest in Oakland Cemetery 2 Aug 1915.
(Stina was listed as the informant on Nels death certificate and yet the information there included a birth date only of 1849 and his father's name was listed as Ole Thorson. Even the gravestone for Nels has the wrong death year listed - 1916!)
