Jules Goux was born Valentigney, France, and was a Grand Prix motor racing champion and the first European and first Frenchman to win the Indianapolis 500. He won the 1912 Sarthe Cup at Le Mans driving a Peugeot, and in 1913 he traveled with the team to the United States to compete in the Indianapolis 500 mile race. Goux won the race, finishing more that 13 minutes ahead of the field, and led 138 of the 200 laps. Goux returned the following year and finished 4th, and raced three more times at the Indy 500, his best finish being 3rd in 1919. His racing career had to be put aside for service in the French military after the outbreak of WW I. Goux returned to European Grand Prix motor racing in 1921, finishing third in the French Grand Prix then winning the inaugural Italian Grand Prix. He last raced in the Indianapolis 500 in 1922. He was not to win again until 1926, when he won both the French Grand Prix at Miramas and the European Grand Prix at the Circuito Lasarte, Spain. Afterwards, he retired from racing.
At the time of his death he was still living in the town of his birth, in an area dominated economically by the long established Peugeot business with their main plant at nearby Sochaux.
