Gustina Marie "Gussie" Eide was born Jan. 1, 1918 at Shields, ND to George and Mathilda (Somerfeldt) Nedella. She spent her early years on the family farm and received her early education. The Nedella family moved to the Nisland area in 1930 and during those hard times, they all worked in the "valley" in the beet and cucumber fields. She learned hard work at an early age and worked in a dairy to help with expenses so she could go to school, graduating from Nisland High School in 1938.
She then was able to attend General Beadle Normal School in Madison, SD and earned her teachers certificate. She taught the Loup School and in Nisland prior to her marriage to Palmer J. Eide on Sept. 6, 1944 at Newell. They began their life together and raised their family on the farm near Nisland. On the farm she gardened extensively, canned the produce, worked in the fields and cared for her family. She faithfully attended St. Mary's Catholic Church in Newell and served on the Altar Society and was a member of Extension Club and the Nisland Legion Auxiliary.
After her family was raised, Gussie began working at the Sturgis Community Hospital and also volunteered over 3000 hours at Fort Meade Veterans Admin. Medical Center. Shortly before Mr. Eide passed away in 1980, they moved to Belle Fourche to make their home. She loved keeping busy and volunteered at the Senior Citizens Center, the Museum and worked with her sister and brother in law operating a cleaning service. She participated in the Senior Olympics, pitching horseshoe and enjoyed the dances at the Center. Her greatest joy was her family, having them "home" for special occasions, quilting for them, making lots of apple crisp and being the "official gravy maker".
She maintained her home until the past seven months when she moved to an assisted living facility in Belle Fourche.
Keeping her in their fondest memories are her son and daughter in law: Kenneth and Beverly Eide of Nisland, daughters and son in law; Karen and Ed Johnson of Syracuse, Nebr and Marlene Eide of Sturgis, 7 grandchildren; Traci Hallowell, Todd & Scott Johnson, Melody, Brook, Michael & Betsy Eide, 3 great grandchildren; Madison Johnson, Zach & Josh Hallowell, four brothers; Matt and Tony Nedella of Bullhead City, AZ, George Nedella of St. Petersburg, FL and Jerry Nedella of Sturgis, 2 sisters; Susan Levesque of Childersburg, AL and Eva Dulany of Rapid City, SD. She was preceded in death by her husband, Palmer Eide in 1980, her parents, brothers; Leonard and John Nedella and sisters; Emma Nedella, Ann Keil and Rose Keil.
