William Carney Sr., fled enslavement in the South on the Underground Railroad and eventually settled in Massachusetts, where he worked and bought his family's freedom. By the late 1850s, the now-free Carney family moved to New Bedford, Massachusetts. He is the father of Sgt William Harvey Carney, a Civil War Hero, and first African-American recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor. William Carney Sr. was aged 85y at death.
