Johann Adam Knauff was born June 3, 1824 in Vollmerz, Hesse-Kassel, Germany and died May 29, 1899 in Findley Twp., Mercer Co., Pa. He was the son of Johann Nicholas Knauff 1781-1855, and Barbara Catharine Weining 1785-1834. Adam married Elisabeth Ifft on April 7, 1846 in Mercer Co., Pa. Elisabeth was born April 4, 1827 in Elm, Hesse-Kassel. Her biological parents were Anna Guenther 1806-1886 and Christoph Rau 1803-? Anna married Johann Peter Ifft on May 13, 1831 in Elm, Hesse-Kassel, and in the same year, immigrated to the USA. Peter Ifft legally adopted Elisabeth.

When Adam was 6 years old, he traveled from his home in Hess-Kassel, Germany with his parents, siblings and several cousins to their new home in America. They arrived in the Port of Baltimore on Sept. 30, 1831. They first settled in the woods of Butler County, Pa. Adam's father died in 1855 and his mother in 1834. They had 6 children: Nicholas, Michael, John, Michael (2), Adam & Margaret, who married Michael Senkan. They were members of the German Lutheran Church. Adam was a tailor for some time and then farmed. Elisabeth's parents, Peter & Anna Guenther-Ifft, were natives of the same country, and came to America on the same vessel with the Knauff family. Her parents settled in Beaver County, Pa. They had 6 children: Peter, Jacob, John Eliza, Barbara & Gertrude.

Adam and Elisabeth had 10 children, 3 died in infancy:

John Michael, born Feb. 1853 in Jackson Twp., Butler Co., Pa; died Dec 1, 1918 in Findley Twp., Mercer Co., Pa; married Helena M. Reeher; born Nov. 1853; died Nov. 13, 1943.

Anna Gertrude Knauff, born Sept. 29, 1864 in Beaver Co., Pa; died April 10, 1952 in Erie, Pa; she married Martin Sylvester Bortz on Dec. 25, 1884; he was born July 3, 1857; died Oct. 15, 1927 in Mercer Co., Pa;

Mary Matilda Knauff, born July 12, 1867 in Findley Twp., Mercer Co., Pa; died April 25, 1938; married Milton Bortz, born 1866; died Dec 27, 1952;

Charles (Charley) Gottlieb Knauff, born Jan 18, 1874 in Findley Twp., Mercer Co., Pa; died April 2, 1918 in Mercer Co., Pa. Charley never was married. He had Down's Syndrome and lived with his parents. He is also buried with them in Blacktown Cemetery.

Adam made out his will on the 30th day of August, 1897 and left everything to his beloved wife, Elisabeth. He died at his home on May 29, 1899 at 6pm. in Findley Twp., Mercer Co., Pa; Elisabeth passed away in 1905. Charley was taken care of by his brothers, John Adam & Jacob until his death in 1918.
