On June 26, 1863, the President issued a proclamation, calling for 60,000 men to be mustered into service of the state of Pennsylvania for ninety days to secure the borders of the state.

William Knauff enlisted in the 55th Pa. Militia Infantry Regiment, Company F on June 27, 1863. When the service of the militia was no longer required the majority of men mustered out in August & September of that year. William mustered out with his company on August 26, 1863.

William was never married and lived all his life in Mercer Co., Pa. with his sister, Margaret & brother, John.
