Mary Ann Brown Carter was the daughter of Peter Ebenezer Brown, Sr. and Margaret Collette Brown, married Anderson C. Carter, son of Rev. Jacob A. Carter and Sally Sarah Edmonds on October 31, 1847 in Greene County, Tennessee.

Mary's husband died at the end of the Civil War. Their land was sold on the steps of the McDonald County Court House and Mary's X appears on the documents.

Mary and Anderson were the parents of 12 children:
