Symen Stam, age 95, died peacefully February 7, 1993, while sick with pneumonia.
Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and uncle was born January 7, 1898 in Dordrecht, The Netherlands, as the oldest of 13 children to Hendrik Stam and Adriana in 't Veld. He emigrated to the United States with his father at the age of 17 and the rest of the family coming over later. He married Gerritje (Georgia) Maria van der Linden, June 25, 1920 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. She preceded him in death July 1975. He remarried Magdalena de Groot, June 17, 1976 and loved her four children as if they were his own. Even though he remarried at age 78, he and Magdalena were able to celebrate their 16th wedding anniversary last summer. He has lived an examplary life, putting the Lord first in everything, sharing honestly with those who worked for him in his painting business, and so he never became rich, but was never poor either, he had all he needed.
He went on three missions to the Netherlands. First, alone in 1929; 2nd, with his wife, from 1946-1948, where he worked under Ezra Taft Benson and Cornelius Zappey, helping with the Dutch potato project to feed hungry people in post-war Germany; 3rd, with his wife, as a bishop to the Rotterdam-South Ward from 1963-1965. He was president of the Holland LDS Organization from 1955-1959.
Survived by his wife Magdalena; the following sons and daughters, John and Maria van Lent, Salt Lake City; Steven and Anneke Donnelly, Athens, Greece; Jan and Nellie Doornbos, Salt Lake City; Ard and Karen Doornbos, Salt Lake City; 11 grandchildren, one great-grandchild; sisters Anna Astle, Min Fellows, Alletta de yell, Sjaan McCarrel.
