Charles Earl Maher was born to Ambrose and Ethel Maher on May 6, 1928, in Cliffs, Idaho. Charlie worked on Ambrose's cattle ranch and went to school in Cliffs and Jordan Valley until November of his junior year of high school. That winter Charlie stayed at Three Forks and rode on the desert, then went to Marsing High School to complete his junior and senior years of high school.

Charlie got his start in the cow business at the age of five, when his Mother, Ethel, gave him a milk cow's calf. Over the next five decades Charlie grew his cow herd to several hundred. Charlie married Mary Catherine Fenwick in November 1948 in Ontario, Oregon. In August 1949 their first child, Joe, was born. Their second child, Steve, was born in March 1952.

Ambrose suffered a stroke in 1952, so he and Ethel leased the ranch to Frank Maher, Charlie's oldest brother. At that time, Charlie and Mary moved to the Whitehorse Ranch, north of McDermitt, Nevada, to ride colts from 1952 to 1955. Charlie and Mary moved to Alturas, California, in 1955, and Charlie went to work at the saw mill, being promoted to boss of the night shift by July of 1956.

In the fall of 1957, Paul Stewart from the Whitehorse Ranch asked Charlie to return to the Whitehorse to be the cow boss. In November 1960, Charlie and Mary had a third child, Frances. In November 1961, Charlie and Mary bought the ranch north of Jordan Valley, Oregon, from Mary's parents, Joe and Edith Fenwick. Mary passed away in December 1975. Charlie sold the ranch in 1979, and bought a small irrigated property at Emmett, Idaho.

Charlie married Alice Beckman on March 22, 1986 and gained two stepchildren, two stepgrandsons and three stepgranddaughters.

Charlie enjoyed raising papered Thoroughbred and Quarter Horses, including standing stallions for both his mares and outside mares. He also enjoyed team roping, going to livestock sales, horse sales and horse races. Charlie was happy to help his friends and children brand calves and gather cows whenever we needed him. Charlie had accumulated three trophy saddles by winning the Jordan Valley Big Loop Horse Roping at the Jordan Valley Rodeo in 1963, 1965 and 1979.

Charlie is survived by his wife, Alice; his children: Joe (Barbara) Maher, of Crane, OR, Steve (Amorita) Maher, of McDermitt, NV, and Frances (Art) Gale, of Asotin, WA; two stepchildren: Brad (Vicki) Beckman, of Emmett, and Diana (Scott) Breeding, of Murtaugh; grandchildren: Mary (Sonny) Bengoa, of Battle Mountain, NV, Reme (Ryan) Huttman, of Winnemucca, NV, Tim Maher, of McDermitt, NV, Michelle (Hector) Martinez and Megan Maher, of Independence, OR, Alison Gale and Catherine Gale, of Asotin, WA; two stepgrandsons: Nathan Breeding, of Murtaugh, and Sean (Hayley) Beckman, of Seattle, WA; three stepgranddaughters: Danielle (Andy) Stephens, of Meridian, Kelsey Breeding, of Boise, and Amberly Beckman, of Lewiston; three great-grandsons: Sean and Sam Bengoa, of Battle Mountain, NV, and Xavier Martinez, of Independence, OR.

Charlie was a loving man and much cherished by his family.
