THOMAS W. LISTER EX-SHERIFF HAS PASSED AWAY
The funeral of Thomas W. Lister will be held at 2p.m. Tuesday at Pilgrim's Rest.
Ex-Sheriff Thomas W. Lister, father of the present sheriff, John P. Lister, and one of the best known citizens of Etowah County died at his home in Smokeneck (Southside), eight miles south of Gadsden, this morning shortly after 9 o'clock.
The funeral arrangements had not been completed at noon. News of the death of Tom Lister will occasion much sorrow in this city and throughout the county for he was widely known and universally liked. He had been sick for about a year with some sort of intestinal trouble. A week or so ago he entered a local hospital and underwent a minor surgical operation but did not seem to get better. In fact he began to grow worse soon afterwards and during Thursday and Friday it was easily seen that he was desperately ill and could not live long. He expressed a desire to go home to his beloved and devoted wife, who has been a helpless invalid for four years and yesterday he was taken there. Early this morning messages came that he was dying and at 9:30 his death was announced.
Tom Lister was a successful farmer and a valued citizen. His nine living children have been well educated, some of them for the learned professions and all have been well fitted for life. He was born and reared in the county and was always one of it's leading and most prosperous farmers. In 1892 he became chief deputy sheriff, serving until 1894 when he was elected sheriff. He was a mighty good man, one who was always in excellent humor and ready to lend a hand to any worthy undertaking. Preceded in death daughter Nancy Archer
The deceased leaves a wife and nine children: Bud (JR), Ed, Ike, John, Gus, Will, Bob, Fitzhugh and Miss Ethel. John is the present sheriff of the county.
His brothers are Adam, Bob, P.B. and R. Lister. His sisters are Miss Sallie Lister, Mrs. Margaret Plott, Mrs. Priscilla Cunningham and Mrs. Fuhrman.
Mr. Lister was Mason and that organisation will will have charge of the funeral.
He was 64 years old.
