Leonard graduated from Acushnet Jr High School and attended Bedford High School. He enlisted in the Marines 4 November 1965, at a recruiting office in Boston.
When he arrived in Vietnam, Leonard was assigned to Fox Company, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division. The battalion was participating in Operation Beacon Hill to drive out hostile forces around Hill 881N and 8 kilometers west northwest of the Khe Sanh Airfield, when the battalion was engaged by hostile forces. Leonard died during the fierce fighting as a result of a gunshot wound to the neck from hostile rifle fire, during combat in the vicinity of Huong Hoa and Hill 881N.

Leonard was single and served his country for one year.
