Mildred was the daughter of Charlie Barm Case of McNairy County, Tennessee, and Nettie Dunlap of Mills County, Texas. Mildred wrote many letters from her birthplace, Mullin TX, to her best chum and third cousin, Tiana Godwin Smith. When the Case family gave up on farming in Texas due to the Great Depression, they returned to Tennessee. After the Case family returned to her father’s family area in McNairy County, Tennessee, she and Tiana continued their correspondence. After some years, Tiana visited Mildred in Memphis and attended nursing school briefly. Mildred went from being a strait-laced country girl to being a sophisticated, independent city woman with multiple rental units. Mildred married Mayne McCaddon, and they had one daughter, Nettie Lee McCaddon. After Mayne’s death, Mildred married four more times, but eventually returned to the name of her first husband and her daughter. Mildred supported herself and Nettie with her real estate business, buying and renting houses and rooms. They most often made their home in Memphis, Tennessee. Mildred's letters are featured in GODWIN ARCHIVES, VOL 7a & b: MESSAGES FROM MILDRED in TEXAS; and MESSAGES FROM MILDRED in TENNESSEE by Peggy Smith Wolfe, available at lulu.com.
