Lavern S. Carter of Trinity, Texas and formerly of Ava, died at age 86 on Monday, August 27, 2010, at Avalon Place Nursing Home in Trinity, Texas.
He was born in Murphysboro on August 1, 1924, the son of Coleman and Lura Jarrett Carter.
Survivors include one son, Ricky Carter of Marion; one brother, Donald Carter of Murphysboro; two sisters, Evelyn McBride, formerly of Ava, and Mrs. Ruby Knight of Carmi.
His parents; one brother Charles; and two sons, Gary and Billy, preceded him in death.
Lavern was a U. S. Navy Veteran, serving during World War II from November 1941 to October 1945, and then in the U. S. Army from March 1948 to November 1955 during the Korean War. He was a life member of BBK American Legion Post 480 of Steeleville and the VFW Post 1301 in Marion. He loved socializing in the Veteran's Club.
He worked into his eighties for Home Enterprises, installing lifeline support systems for the elderly.
