Born : July 1822 in Scotland, according to 1900 census. This is different from what his gravestone indicates, so his age was not correct on the stone or the 1900 census information is not correct. Died in Hampton Falls NH (Rockingham County).

According to his NH Death and Burial Record, his parents were William Brown and Margaret Lamont.

Joseph and his family immigrated to the USA in 1856. His daughter Bessie was the only child born in the USA, all others were born in Scotland.

1860 - living in Hampton Falls NH with his wife he is working as a farmer. Children : William a farm laborer, Hugh, Margrate, George, Mary A, and Bessy.

1870 - living in Hampton Falls NH with his wife he is working as a farmer. Children : Hugh working in a shoe factory, Margaret working as a domestic servant, George working in a shoe factory, Mary A working in a shoe factory, and Bessie "at school".

1900 - living in Hampton Falls NH with his wife he is working as a farmer. The data gives us his birth as July 1822, his wife's birth as June 1822, states they have been married for 50 years (1850 ?), and 3 of their 6 children are still living. Also listed is George T Drysdale a grandson (according to NH Birth & Christening Records he was the son of Bessie Brown and Thomas Drysdale).

1900 - children still living : Hugh, George, and Mary. William died in 1870, Margaret in 1875, and Bessie in 1878.

Hugh is listed 2 lines above on the same census page, born Oct 1854, he is single, working as a farmer, and has a boarder, Frank R McLane who was born May 1863 in Canada, is a widow, and is working as a stone mason.
